Visiting Port of the Islands for Manatees

As we continued on our journey through Florida on US Route 41, we stopped at Port of the Islands, on the edge of the Everglades, for the night. While there, we discovered that Manatee Sightseeing Eco-Tourism Adventure operates out of the resort's marina. We signed-up online and early the next morning we met Captain Rich for our tour.

Captain Rich had warned us that because of Hurricane Irma he couldn't guarantee we would see manatees. That was okay with us so we set sail on a pontoon boat into the canals. Being that this was the Everglades, we saw plenty of alligators.

All types of birds could be seen along the shoreline. Many of them were quite pretty.

We even happened upon a curious raccoon on the shore.

But sadly, no manatees were found during our short one and a half hour tour. Our tour with Manatee Sightseeing Eco-Tourism Adventure was still the highlight of our entire vacation. If we are ever in the area again we will definitely be taking another tour.
