Once in Brevard it didn't take us long to spot our first white squirrel. If you head over to the campus of Brevard College the odds are pretty high that you will spot one too. We spent maybe 30 minutes walking the beautiful grounds around the school and saw 4 different ones. That was about 1 white squirrel for every grey squirrel we saw.
These little furry critters are so loved in the town that they even have a festival for them. The White Squirrel Festival is held at the end of May each year on the downtown streets. You can find great food, music, and crafters at the festival.
If you don't want to eat on the street you can always duck into one of the good restaurants in town. Don't forget to stop by Rocky's Grill and Soda Shop for a burger and a malt!
One thing we really enjoyed about our stay was the classic small town attitude that Brevard exudes. The people are, for the most part, laid-back and friendly. They are also very patriotic. Flags and ceremonies to honor service men and women dotted the festivities.
Want more animals? In addition to the Pisgah Pete, a rescued white squirrel, you could find miniature donkeys and a sugar bear to make you squeal, "How cute!"
Do the small town thing right and stay at the Red House Inn bed and breakfast. The Inn is within walking distance of downtown. The Trusler family are awesome hosts and will do everything to make your stay enjoyable. We stayed in the Probart Room on the first floor.
Nearby to the town are the many waterfalls of Transylvania county. In just a short drive you have access to dozens of great falls. The county's tagline is actually "Land of Waterfalls".
We enjoyed our stay so much that we have put Brevard, North Carolina on our short list for places we are looking to purchase a vacation home. Visit and you will probably enjoy your time as well.
