Is Katie’s Cars and Coffee the Best Cruise-In in the DC Area?
Katie’s is the only cruise-in in the Washington, DC area that will get the crew from Bubba’s Garage up at 5am to be in the parking lot of Katie’s Coffee House by 7am. For us, it takes a little over an hour to drive to this fantastic cruise-in in Great Falls, VA. Many of these die hard car guys meet year-round from 7am until 9am. You will find everything from European exotics to American muscle cars parked on the lots. Often you will find vehicles slowly cruising the lots that most people only get to see in a museum.
First Cruisin’ the Cone Zone of 2012
You could not have asked for better weather for the season opener at the Cone Zone in Charles Town, WV. This cruise-in happens every Friday night, from 6pm until 9pm, now through September 28. On most nights you can find a mix of modern muscle to vintage classics parked on the lot. Parking can be a bit tight at times since lot is also used for the Somerset Shopping Center. So get there early, eat some ice cream, listen to some tunes, and enjoy the night.
The Cone Zone is a good place to catch-up with friends. Our buddy Roger Mattei brought out his new toy, a 2008 Dodge Viper SRT 10, and Dale cruised in with one of his customs.
Dare to be different. This character rode in on a roadster he cobbled together from parts left from an old model T Ford. Being the first car she owned, Peg loves to see old orange Chevettes. This one with big meats out back and an engine to spin them was quite a bit more than her old rust bucket Flintstone mobile. There are many “I remember when” moments to be had at these cruise-ins.
You have your vintage classics and street rods to look at.
Or maybe something just a little younger will grab your attention.
And then there is the stuff just for fun. Cruisin’ the Cone Zone is a great way to spend a Friday night.
What’s at Coffee and Cars in Great Falls, VA?
We got up early to drive across the mountain and enjoy the Coffee and Cars Saturday morning cruise-in at Katie’s Coffee House in Great Falls, VA. Held every Saturday from 7am until 9am, this cruise-in attracts many high end vehicles and this foggy morning was no exception. The warm weather during the week packed in all the car nuts and parking was tight.
There were a half dozen or so Lamborghini models scattered about. I have always been a sucker for these sleek monsters. Too bad I could never fit into one. Peg was trying to figure out how much money was on display but quickly gave up. Too much was her answer.
A large majority of the cars present were European cars. You had your choice of Ferraris, Porsches, Mercedes, Jaguars, Aston Martins, Maseratis, and even Minis to look at this weekend.
The domestic side of the house was well represented as with Corvettes, Vipers, and Shelbys. There was even a 1999 Shelby Series 1 in the parking lot. You don’t see one of those very often.
Vintage cars were on hand for those who like them. How about looking at an Austin Healey Sprite “Bugeye”, a custom VW Bus, or maybe a vintage Jaguar?
It was still a little chilly but it didn’t stop these 1934 MG and Alfa-Romeo from dropping their tops.
I got all giggly when I saw this 1929 Bentley drive in. Yes, it was driven in! I really love Coffee and Cars since it never fails to put a smile on my face.
Here is probably a car you have never seen before. How about a Fisker? Yup, there is all kinds of cool stuff showing up at Coffee and Cars!
When you are crawling around on the ground taking photos, you never know who might take an interest in you.
So, get out of bed and go experience Coffee and Cars for yourself. You won’t regret it!
Friday Night at the Country Roads Car Club’s Cruise-In
With only a handful of Cruise-Ins remaining for the 2011 season, we decided to take Peg’s new Fiat 500C out for a drive. The temperatures were perfect because of the overcast skies. Rain was threatening the entire day and this kept the turn-out a little low. Still, a good variety of vehicles were present and we were able to chat with friends. Peg’s Fiat drew a small crowd as not many people have seen the new car up close. I kind of felt like a car salesman answering all the questions about her car.
We enjoy this cruise-in which is located in the Home Depot Shopping Center in Ranson, WV.
Country Roads Car Club Home Depot Cruise-In
I finally made it over to the Country Roads Car Club’s new Cruise-In location in Ranson, WV. The Cruise-In is held every Friday night and there is so much more room in the Home Depot parking lot compared to the old Cone Zone location in Charles Town. I like the new area but really miss the atmosphere that the ice cream stand brings. There is some real competition since the Cone Zone is still doing their Friday Cruise-In as well. It’s nice to have choices. I guess we will have to see how everything shakes out.
A very special auto made an appearance at the Cruise-In. I doubt very many people have ever seen a Bizzarrini 5300 GT American. I am really glad I dragged myself out of the house and was able to see this rare ride.
