Hot Rodders Invade Sled Fest – Ducannon, PA

Sled Fest is a play on words. Most people would take it to mean a car show for “lead sleds”. But, it is actually an automotive lifestyle event held in the parking lot of The Old Sled Works in Ducannon, PA. The Old Sled Works is a large antique shop that now inhabits the former home of the Lightning Guider sled factory.

The Hooligans Car Club of Central PA were the hosting club for the event and they did a good job of greeting all the hot rodders with a smile. Any vehicle older than 1972 was welcome.

There were a few nicely done street rods on the lot like Barry Bowers 1930 Ford Coupe and others.

But the majority of the vehicles occupying the gravel lot were cool drivers and some rat rods.

Shannon Bakor’s 1959 Edsel Ranger was right at home in this collection of iron while this 1950 Chevy Fleetline was totally bitchin’. Does anyone know who the owner is?

Of course Peg had to visit her favorite vendor, The Top Shelf Online, and purchase a cool pair of Crown Deluxe Sunglasses. She picked the “Bad Librarian Deluxe” style! There were a good number of vendors on hand to sell their wares. We bought some pinstripe art, a custom bowling pin, a cute apron (for Peg!), and I even was able to add to my hearse collection.

There were some great bands entertaining the crowds. First up was Trio Agave out of Lancater, PA. They play some “great instrumental rock with surf tendencies”.

Dave Moore and His Hillbilly Huxters had me wanting to dance. Their rockabilly sounds really livened up the crowd.

To duck out of the sun for a little we checked out the inside of The Old Sled Works. There are plenty of antiques and crafts to purchase in the long building. We learned a little about the history of the factory by walking through the sled museum. There is also a vintage arcade with working games and novelties. And, you can eat ice cream at the vintage soda bar.

By now I was ready for a nap. Scott Kauffman’s 1971 Chevy Van would have made the perfect place to snooze.

Call it patina. Call it rust. It is all just cool. We had a good time, ate some good barbecue, listened to some great music, and enjoyed the company of some fantastic people. Sled Fest makes for a great day.
